Bicycle facility planning, design, and mapping
Beginning in 1972, we've worked on local bicycle plans in a variety of places;
state workshops and design guides in North Carolina, Florida, Washington,
and New Jersey, and national programs for the Federal Highway Administration
and the U.S. Department of Transportation. Here are some of the specific
projects we've worked on:
- In the early 1970s, created two bicycle plans for San Luis Obispo
(one of which won first place in a national competition) and helped create
the first plan for Bellingham, Washington;
- Taught or assisted with over 30 multi-day bicycle facility planning
and design workshops for USDOT, NCDOT, FLDOT, WADOT, the Traffic Institute,
and others;
- Wrote North Carolina DOT's 1990 Bicycle Facility Planning and Design
Guidelines
- Through Bikecentennial (now the Adventure Cycling Association), organized
an extensive review of 1981 AASHTO Guide for the Development of New Bicycle
Facilities;
- Developed bicycle parking program and rack design used in Missoula,
MT, for over 10 years; to date, over 400 racks installed downtown;
- Managed creation of full-color bicycle suitability maps for Missoula,
MT; Durham, NC; and Wilmington, NC; this last one won a national cartographic
award;
- Organized and taught week-long bicycle planning and design workshops
for Bikecentennial;
- Part of team creating bicycle plans for Lubbock and San Antonio, TX;
handled planning, design, and public involvement and outreach efforts;
- Organized and ran focus groups with youngsters, people with disabilities,
and seniors for Puget Sound Regional Council non-motorized transportation
plan;
- Team-taught multi-day bicycle mapping and week-long bicycle coordinator
"boot camp" workshops for Florida DOT.
